Prof. (Dr.) Roy K. George

Director, BMH Academy

Prof.(Dr.) Roy.K.George, a senior Professor in Mental Health Nursing and a PhD holder in Behavioral Sciences has decades of experience in academic administration in colleges and universities in addition to his passion for teaching and research. He is the head of academic wing consisting of 3 academic institutions under the umbrella of Baby Memorial Hospital viz School of Nursing, College of Nursing and College of Allied Medical Sciences. He is in charge of planning, development and administration of academic activities of different streams spreading over Diploma, Degree, Post Graduate and Ph.D programme in Nursing and Allied Health Sciences.

Dr. Krishna Kumar passed his MBBS & MCh (Plastic Surgery) from Trivandrum Medical College & MS from KMC Mangalore. He then proceeded to UK for further training and passed PLAB & FRCS from both Edinburgh & Glasgow colleges. He completed the 6 years specialist Plastic surgery training obtaining the degree FRCS (Plastic Surgery). He was awarded the CCT and entry into the UK Specialist Register in Plastic Surgery. He completed the Hand & Microsurgery fellowship from the world-renowned Christine M Kleinert Institute, Louisville, Kentucky, USA, and then returned to India.

He set up the first modern Plastic surgery unit in Malabar. Within a short span of time developed it into one of the better known units, providing cutting edge service in the entire sub speciality spectrum of Plastic surgery with a case load of around 150/month, which includes micro vascular surgeries and replants, reconstructions utilizing micro vascular and regional flaps to reconstruct head & neck & breast cancers and Limb Sarcomas, upper limb service to ensure near normal functional recovery for major hand injuries.

He started health tourism in a big way hosting patients requiring cosmetic and reconstructive procedures.  He also established the first state of the art burn unit in Kerala utilizing the latest “early excision & grafting” technique through which we were able to save lives of numerous severely burnt patients.

Dr Krishna Kumar has been a training faculty in the National Microsurgery training programme, National Hand Surgery Training Scheme and National flap course and was the President of the Kerala Plastic Surgeons Association. He runs the Accredited DrNB for Plastic surgery. He has so far trained 15 – 20 plastic surgery trainees in addition to multiple Jr Plastic surgeons who have joined him after their training elsewhere. He is also an examiner for Plastic surgery DrNB. He also established the first Smile Train affiliated Cleft unit in Malabar.

Dr Krishna Kumar was selected as an Examiner for the MRCS by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh & Glasgow and has examined in numerous exams in India and abroad. He has been responsible in bringing this exam (MRCS RCSEd) and the training courses to Kerala (MRCS Prep Courses). He has been selected as a fellow of the faculty of surgical trainers of RCSEd. He has also been appointed as the International Surgical advisor to the RCSEd for Kerala.

Dr Krishna Kumar is the FIRST Plastic surgeon from India to be invited to lecture in PAKISTAN for their national conferences. He has attended two of their national conferences – In Multan & Bahawalpur, and have been an invited International faculty in quite a few countries – Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Oman, Lebanon, Middle East, UK, USA etc and is a  part of the International charity – “Operation Smile” and have conducted free surgeries in various countries. He was instrumental in setting the upper limb Unit – in Kenyatta National Hospital and has been the faculty since then and an examiner for Plastic Surgery in Nairobi University, Keniya.

He has been awarded numerous awards in the local & international scene – Best paper in the New Zealand national conference, Best paper in the British Aesthetic conference, Best candidate in the British microsurgical training course etc.  His work has been published in major journals round the world and has twenty-five plus publications in his name. Dr Krishna Kumar has penned a chapter about Clefts in the “Bailey & Love Companion Guide.” He is a member of the editorial board of two major journals – Pakistan Journal of Plastic Surgery & Journal of Surgical Wound Care & Research.
